I'm not quite sure where any of this came from... at some point I will ease up on the angst. Not quiteyet though. :D I have not even read this part through yet, sorry for typos / bits that don't make any sense etc.

I had to wait all day for a chance to write, and technically it's Monday now... But for me, and Harry, it still feels like Sunday night.

Oh my goodness, I think it has only just sunk in that I've committed to writing and posting a whole fic this month. This morning I told my husband: 'I only need an hour today, I'll only write about 500 words.' It's dark outside now. :/

Also, I should probably mention this again: sorry, this thing is totally unbetaed. And as predicted I am posting this about two minutes after typing the last word, so apologies for typos etc.

I hope today's offering(s) make up for Harry being an idiot  the past few days without posts!

Hello there! I've had a bit of a break from LJ recently but I'm back. And, er, somewhat coincidentally I finally submitted my erised. *coughs* *waves at everyone*

I've decided to write an advent fic this year. I haven't posted a WIP in ages, but er, I think it's manageable (and some is already written, thank goodnes!) It's a non-fluffy tale of heartache, love and Christmas cheer.

I won't post every day - the story itself will explain why, but there will be 24 parts of varying length to read by the time Christmas day rolls up. And it's going to be unbetaed, as I will probably only finish writing each section about five seconds before I hit 'post'! I will probably return to tidy it it all up at some point, so if you notice any glaring errors please feel free to send me a pm. If I get ahead of myself with the writing (I do have it all planned out) I will see if my betas have time to help out, but as Christmas approaches I think that the answer will be 'no'. They already think I'm mad for doing this in the first place. :D

Um, I have spent an hour on coming up with a title and still nothing. I will think of one, promise.

Here's my fic for this year's [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair. I was inspired by a beautiful man I saw in the distance on holiday this summer, a walk on Hampstead Heath with [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraffe and also the lovely gift fic Riches Ready to Drop Upon Me that [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore wrote for me earlier this year.

Title: A Future Unknown
Author: [livejournal.com profile] omi_ohmy
Prompt: # 10
Book Title: Predicting the Unpredictable: Insulate Yourself Against Shocks
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Summary: Draco had always thought that the ability to see the future would have saved him a lot of grief. The choices are no easier, however, when he is cursed to see an endless set of futures featuring Harry Potter.
Word Count: ~25,000
Author's Notes: When I picked [livejournal.com profile] bryoneybrynn's prompt, I thought that it might be a bit of a fun challenge to write about future visions. And indeed it was – I have spent hours scratching my head and figuring this out. Thank you to my wonderful trio of betas, [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraffe and [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo for helping me with plotholes, typos and all the usual mess. Thank you too, to the eternally patient (ahem) mods.

Some recs

I really wanted to join in with Rectober, but I was really short on time in October. So here are some recs now! Um, consider it me carrying the baton on.

I am still catching up on all the amazing fics in this year's [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair. I have recced one I particularly enjoyed below, but may well end up reccing more in the future.

HD Level 2 )

These two fics really touched my heart and I found them both original and beautiful )

Before I forget, here is the fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] hp_silencio In the Library. It was really interesting writing for a fest that stipulated no dialogue: I realised that some of my one-shots were already veering in this directions. I was also very happy to have the opportunity to write a fic for [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo, who left the original prompt. :)

Title: In the Library
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Word Count: ~2,700
Summary: There's no talking in the library at Hogwarts, not under Madam Pince's watch. Unfortunately, there's only one copy of the book Harry and Draco both need for the Potions essay that is due the next morning, so they will have to find some way to share. Quietly.
Author Notes: As soon as I saw this prompt, I wanted to write it – so thank you, dear prompter (and thank you for a prompt good enough to use as a summary too, hehe). Thank you to my wonderful betas, [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore and [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraff, and to the lovely mod too for being so nice in the face of various panicky emails.

I have had my beta hat on this week – reading some really wonderful stuff by [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes and [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730. As it happens, I made gently encouraged both of them to go a little more NC-17 than they had already written (as it fitted the stories they were telling). Anyway, I ended up compiling lots of notes about the writing of smut, and [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes suggested I make them into a proper LJ post. And here it is!

I should say that I don’t write much smut, and have written much less so far this year than last. [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraff helped me lots when I first started, with her constant reminders to meander. But I enjoy writing smut (although don’t profess to be any kind of expert – I’d say I’m actually quite tame), and I often have lots to say on the subject as a beta-reader, mostly in the form of endless questions, as will become apparent.

Also, I want to make clear that none of this is a criticism of any other writer, more just questions and issues that have come up through discussion with people through the beta process (both giving and receiving edits). These are all quite personal views; this is by no means a definitive guide to writing smut. And I should note that it’s mainly about writing a fairly vanilla version of smut (within the world of slash fanfiction), as that’s mostly what I write and beta-read.

Omi's thoughts on writing smut )

(Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo for checking this through for sense and ignoring my liberal sprinkling of Brit commas. <3)

Jumping on the bandwagon, because I finally thought of more than one thing to say.

Ten things, in no particular order, under the cut )
omi_ohmy: (Leaf)
For [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore. Surprise! Somehow I managed to write all day AND write you this, my dear. :)

Title: The Depths of Mystery
Summary: Sybil Trelawney believes in the power of Divination. She believes she glimpses the secrets and mysteries of life. When she sees kissing, skin and… thrusting in her crystal ball, she will not look away. It is her… duty to keep watching.
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: Hard R
Word count: ~1,400
Warnings: Er, Trewlaney PoV?

Author’s note: For [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, on the occasion of her birthday. I can’t remember who I threw this idea around with, but I couldn’t quite forget  it, for some reason. ETA: It was the delightful [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo. Thank you for both the inspiration and the reminder, bb! I hope you like it, Birds (it is pretty random! Sorry, I’m not as good as you at matching likes to gifts, lol), and most of all, thank you for being such a wonderful friend. ♥

This is completely unbetaed, and I apologise for all and any typos, extra commas, terrible grammar and odd repetitions. :D

I have just noticed that the links from AO3 weren't working, so I've linked to this post instead.

This fic was a real labour of love. It's my first Merlin fic, and it's inspired by Keats' poem 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' (if any of you remember my Keats-obsessed phase a while ago). I wrote it for the [livejournal.com profile] paperlegends Merlin Big Bang, and I can't quite believe that it has finally posted - I worked on this for months, and just indulged myself on every aspect of it. Or as I described it on twitter: it's like one of my angsty one-shots, only it's 35k long.

I know that most of my flist is H/D rather than Merlin, but I hope you read it anyway - I'd say you don't need knowledge of the show to read it, although if you are a Merlin fan then it might make you even more sad. It is rather angsty - more so than is my norm.

Happy Capitu-Appreciation Day! Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] capitu, for being all round wonderful and for sharing your love of fics with us all via [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs. I wrote this in the spaces of my holiday this week, and ignored packing for most of today to finish it off. I hope you like it!

Title: Love
Summary: Love is your heart breaking, a little more every day. Sometimes it means letting go; sometimes diving in head first. But it is always worth it.
Word count: 3,280
Rating: Er, PG-13?
Author's notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] capitu for reaching her 1000th rec on [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore for hosting a lovely celebration party for capitu on her journal. I have been musing on what love is all week, and this is the result. It is totally unbetaed and I have form for typos, so apologies in advance.

This post represents procrastination on an epic scale. I am supposed to be writing, but instead have been making notes on how Hagrid speaks, even though he is not in the fic I am writing. But I keep telling myself that this will be helpful, one day. And then I thought that sharing my observations might be of use to someone else, and that makes it fine that I've spent time on writing this all down. Right?

What a great year for [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest! I am hideously behind with reading, but everything I've read so far has been wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I now want a Stanley brooch, with willow pattern and booties and harness. Anyway, I plan on loading up my kindle and working through everything I've missed, even if it takes all summer (with comments to follow - sorry if I haven't read/commented on yours yet, dear f-list).

This year I was lucky enough to pre-read/beta/Brit-pick some real stunners: A Perfect Bond by [livejournal.com profile] indyonblue, But, In Dreams by [livejournal.com profile] kedavranox, Kiss the Joy (Until the Sun Rise) by [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo, Black Island by [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730, and Hungry by [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore. They are all wonderful, ranging from fluff to angst, via soulful poetry (ICM's is destined to become a fandom classic, I think), Eighth-year, tropical islands, a wedding, and some very hot sex, er, I mean a Seer's visions and troubled life.

As for my own fic, I wrote The Comfort of Tea. I just wanted to have fun, and so I did. I wrote bad jokes, and pissing, and tea-drinking. Oodles of fluff, and no smut (sorry!). Thank you to all who left comments - I still working my way through them, as my life is being ridiculously busy and getting in the way, but I will reply to every single one. If you haven't read it yet, do make sure you have a nice cup of tea to hand before you start. :)

I haven't said hello for a while, as I have been busy with all the writing. But I've hit my targets, so here I am with a little update on what I've been up too recently.

Two weeks ago, I went to see the Tempest at the Globe. It was wonderful - a perfect summer's evening, a great production, and oh my goodness, Colin Morgan is beautiful. I mean, I knew this, but seeing him on stage... he stood out, he really did, as a creature of beauty. I couldn't keep my eyes off him. I am tempted to go back to watch it again - as well as Colin being other-wordly and pretty, it was a fantastic experience and I loved every second of it.

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take photos during the performance, so have a nice pic of The Globe on a summer's evening instead.

The Globe, on a summer's evening )

It was good timing too, as I have been busy working on my Paperlegends fic. Last night I finally finished my first draft! It feels so good to have (finally) got to this point.More on writing for Paperlegends )

In HP news, I've claimed a prompt for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair Book Fair, which I'm very excited about. I quickly sketched out some ideas the other day, and will now think about it for a while. It's quite a challenging prompt, and I'm really looking forward to teasing out all the possibilities and getting writing.

I've also got about a million fics to read to catch up on Smoochfest, but what I did manage to read before stopping to get my PL fic finished, I loved!

I do have one quick rec from [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest (I know I'm usually rubbish at reccing, but this one really stood out): Sticky Fingers, art (although art really doesn't seem enough of a description for this story/comic). It is absolutely amazing, and it left me with tears in my eyes as it was just so perfect: beautiful to look at, and a wonderful, gentle story with real soul.
omi_ohmy: (Blossom)
Okay, so I am a terrible friend. It has been more than a week since [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore posted this clever and touching fic as a gift for me. And somehow I am only reccing it now. LJ being a crappy old pain in the bum the last few days hasn't helped, but mostly it's been my own busy life getting in the way.

First of all, I am all a-squirm at being thanked for anything, as she helps me all the time with my fics, typo-squishing and pointing out all the plot holes and canon words I've forgotten to capitalise. And pre-reading and betaing her fics is always a joy, as you might guess. Largely our interactions are based on our mutual love of cock jokes. :D

Title: Riches Ready to Drop Upon Me
Summary: During the nights that follow his trial, Draco dreams as never before.
Rating: PG-13
Word count: ~1400

Why you should all click on the link and not be put off by the effing varnishing goat, but keep refreshing until you can read the story (if you haven't already):
Birds has written something quite special, in my opinion. It is based on a slightly tongue-in-cheek premise, but is also a love letter to H/D fan fiction. I absolutely adored it. I counted references to at least ten fics I could name (three of them mine!), but recognised more. The story was filled with such warmth for the worlds and characters we all share. And the ending! It gave me the most wonderful of Drarry feels, the kind which reminds me why I love this fandom and pairing so much. ♥ ♥ ♥

Or Omi forays into the Merlin fandom. And more Keats.

First of all, let me just reassure Birds all my lovely HP flist that I still adore HP and have written for Smoochfest. I'm still very much here.
