Hello there, flisters.

I thought I'd post to say that yay! I'm still around, and boo! where did the past 8 months go?The past eight months )

Just this very moment I have decided to write a ficlet (at least) each month. A little piece of writing to celebrate (or bemoan) the passing of the year, and a chance to play in the HP world.

I'm hoping that by posting this here, I'll keep myself accountable. *crosses fingers*

Keep your eyes peeled for January...

I wanted to post about writing - looking back over last year, and ahead - and I wanted to post about erised, so here is one squished-up post about them both.

First, erised )

And onto my writing )

And let me just finish by wishing you all a belated Happy New Year, and lots of <3 for all being so wonderful.

Hello, everyone! I am back. Back from the land of RL and of not-working laptops. It has been so long since I last posted on LJ that I have three fics to claim. Anyway, my laptop has just been repaired (by a lovely man who chatted and drank coffee with me) and the sun is shining and spring is in the air. So, happy Omi.

This year I've decided not to sign up for any fests (well, not unless a prompt really jumps out at me). I've been thinking through and dealing with various RL issues - such as retraining, career-wise - and have needed to take a bit of a step back from fandom to have the mental space as well as time to do so. The good news, though, is that I've got a few fic ideas bubbling away, and maybe even an OF idea, too. Plus my RL is a bit more sorted now. Anyway, taking the pressure of deadlines away has been liberating, and I'm looking forward to getting back into writing. I think I've reached a point anyway where I want to try developing my own ideas for stories, rather than needing a prompt to get me started. We'll see how it goes...

Three fics by me )

And to finish, one fic rec.

A Few Brief Moments by [livejournal.com profile] disapparater is the most wonderful remix of / prequel to my fic Sleeping Dragon. I cried when I read it because it was so perfect, both as a remix of a fic that was emotional to write, but also as a lovely fic in its own right. There is a wonderful sweet poignancy to the fic, along with such a strong sense of love, and it is everything I could have wanted for my boys. If you haven't already, rush along and read it now. :)

I have had my beta hat on this week – reading some really wonderful stuff by [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes and [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730. As it happens, I made gently encouraged both of them to go a little more NC-17 than they had already written (as it fitted the stories they were telling). Anyway, I ended up compiling lots of notes about the writing of smut, and [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes suggested I make them into a proper LJ post. And here it is!

I should say that I don’t write much smut, and have written much less so far this year than last. [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraff helped me lots when I first started, with her constant reminders to meander. But I enjoy writing smut (although don’t profess to be any kind of expert – I’d say I’m actually quite tame), and I often have lots to say on the subject as a beta-reader, mostly in the form of endless questions, as will become apparent.

Also, I want to make clear that none of this is a criticism of any other writer, more just questions and issues that have come up through discussion with people through the beta process (both giving and receiving edits). These are all quite personal views; this is by no means a definitive guide to writing smut. And I should note that it’s mainly about writing a fairly vanilla version of smut (within the world of slash fanfiction), as that’s mostly what I write and beta-read.

Omi's thoughts on writing smut )

(Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo for checking this through for sense and ignoring my liberal sprinkling of Brit commas. <3)

This is something I find myself thinking about on a regular basis.

First of all, if you are not familiar with the Bechdel test, it started as one of Alison Bechdel's comic strips Dykes to Watch Out For n 1985 (original here), about a simple way of assessing how women are portrayed in movies.

The test is simple:
  1. It has to have at least two [named] women in it
  2. Who talk to each other
  3. About something besides a man

My review of the year comes a little later than others, because it marks a year since I started writing, rather than review of 2012. Although of course they are the more or less the same. If that makes any sense, bravo, read on.

I have written seventeen fics, with a total of about 225,000 words... )
